Excel Connect To External Data (Access Database )

In this article I will explain how you can connect to an external Access database from Excel.

Step 1:

Click on the From Access button on the Data Ribbon:

Step 2:

Locate the Access database:

Step 3:

A dialog will open asking you to choose the Table to connect to:
Select Access Table

Note: If you want to connect to more than one table, or to the entire database, you must manually repeat this process for all tables.


Step 4:

From the window that opens you can select how you wan the data to be imported:

  • Table
  • Pivot Table
  • Pivot Chart and Table

You can also select where to import the data:

  • A specific range in an existing sheet
  • A new sheet

In this example I have imported the data as a table:

Updating Values:

If changes have been made to the source database you can update them in the excel workbook by clicking on the Refresh All button on the Data ribbon:

Note: The data in the access database must be saved in order for the values to update in the excel workbook
